Rotary supports investments in people to create measurable and enduring economic improvement in their lives and communities.  This October is Rotary’s Economic Community Development Month and we look into one of the initiatives in this focus area: Adopt a Village.

What is Adopt a Village?
This is an initiative that proposes to use a multifaceted and coordinated strategy to break the cycle of poverty in extremely impoverished communities. Funds will be invested in the crucial projects needed to support job creation and economic growth. It will deliver infrastructure that supports projects of economic significance and that will deliver new regional economic opportunities.

Vision: Adopting a village to create economic independence for the empowerment of women, youth, families, persons living with disabilities & other communities (which will benefit all of society).
OUR MISSION
Mission: Transform the adopted village to manage self sustainable economic development, by increasing their income, developing affordable housing, improving access to skills education and ensuring food security.

District 9212 Goals
  1. Development of 4 High Impact turn key projects undertaken by club clusters.
  2. Encourage interclub service visits for benchmarking among clusters.
  3. Support the formation of new Rotary Community Corp in the district in the village that we adopt.
  4. Thematic allocation of initiatives to clubs e.g. Tree planting, Business speed dating, career fairs, mentoring entrepreneurs, distribution of sanitary towels etc.
  5. Encourage joint activities like medical camps and involve non-Rotary members (especially partners who contribute)

Focus Areas:
  1. MICROFINANCE

The Objective is to provide the poor with access to financial services as well as an opportunity for them to build their financial capacity and ability to grow to financial self- sufficiency.  Microfinance would also provide a channel for empowering women due to the fact that in most poor countries women constitute the majority of the poor and “unbanked “as well as provide a multi-purpose tool that Rotarians can use to tackle not mere financial needs of communities but also many other aspects of peoples’ lives. New businesses, jobs, increased incomes, better health and welfare among community members are among the other goals that now come hand in hand with microfinance

  1. GENERATION UNLIMITED
  • Generation Unlimited (GenU) is part of a global initiative designed to help equip young people between the ages 10 and 24 (63%) of Kenya’s population – with the skills they need to thrive in society and the world of work.
The objective is to help with transition (Primary-Secondary-University),  nurture entrepreneurship and promote equitable access to employment opportunities.
This can be achieved through mentorship programs, provision of scholarly materials, sanitary towels, RYLA, Interact conventions YALI- Young African Leadership Initiatives, Rescue centers among others.

  1. LOW COST HOUSING

The goal is to expand the opportunities for homeownership through affordable material and to promote fair housing opportunity for residents in all neighborhoods. There is a need to promote the creation and maintenance of an adequate supply of sound, affordable integrated housing solutions throughout the region, promote programs, education, and training that support and encourage appropriate low cost housing as well as micro financing and, empowerment of individuals through, low-cost housing.

  1. EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN
The sustainable development goals number 5: achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls; and number 4: ensure inclusive and quality education and promote lifelong leatrning – are focused on promoting gender equality and education for all.  Sustainable development goals number 5: achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls; and number 4: ensure inclusive and quality education.
