As part of the Elimika Digital Literacy grant, teacher training continues to play a critical role in ensuring the successful integration of technology in the classroom. Providing schools with digital devices alone is not enough; the true impact lies in equipping teachers with the skills, confidence and knowledge to effectively use these tools to transform learning.
As the cradle of mankind, a land of breath taking landscapes and home to the majestic Lake Turkana, Turkana County in northern Kenya once again became the centre of transformation through education and digital empowerment.
In partnership with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) and the Ministry of Education, the Rotary Club of Nairobi Thika Road facilitated a three-day training on ICT Integration in Teaching & Learning for 40 teachers drawn from Turkana Central.
The training focused on strengthening teachers’ digital competencies, enabling them to seamlessly integrate technology into lesson delivery, enhance learner engagement and embrace innovative teaching approaches aligned with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
But beyond the training rooms and presentations, this journey was deeply reflective.
Travelling over 1,000 kilometres into a region largely classified as Arid and Semi-Arid Land (ASAL), one quickly appreciates the unique challenges schools and teachers in Turkana face daily — from harsh climatic conditions to limited access to resources and connectivity. Yet despite these challenges, the enthusiasm, resilience and hunger to learn demonstrated by the teachers was both inspiring and humbling.
Every session carried more than lessons on digital tools; it carried hope. Hope that learners in some of Kenya’s most marginalized regions will not be left behind in the digital age. Hope that teachers can become catalysts of change within their communities. And hope that technology, when paired with empowered educators, can bridge educational inequalities and unlock opportunities for generations to come.
The Elimika journey continues, one teacher, one classroom and one learner at a time.
